A brief story of mate
From the Guarani to the Jesuit Misiones and today's round: how did the mate get to your hand?
The mate has more than four centuries of written history and more.
The Guarani
The Guarani peoples had been using the sheet, to which they called it ka'a, well before the arrival of Europeans. They chewed her and used her in infusions and rituals.
The Colonial Age
The Spanish quickly adopted their custom. The Jesuit, in their Misiones, achieved something that seemed impossible: to cultivate yerba on plantations. When they were expelled, in the 18th century, that knowledge was lost.
The Reborn
It was once again grown at Misiones and Corrientes by settlers and immigrants at the beginning of the 20th century. That's how many of the brands we have today were born.
Today
The mate has been a national infusion into Argentina since 2013, and the tereré has been a cultural heritage of mankind since 2020 and the round remains an excuse to get together, talk and share.
